Server crash
« on: June 26, 2010, 08:31:56 am »
Edit 10:40 29th June

Users are reporting a very high rate of forbidden error messages. We believe this is a direct cause on the block of China. Therefore, we will be staging an unblock on China today to find out if this is the root cause.

We apologize for any downtime that may occur.

----------------------------

Edit: 11:37 27th June

Hello,

The DDOS attacked was resumed and intensified this morning. We have been able to locate where the attack is coming from and have been forced to deny access to that region.

While we look for solutions to block the offending IP's instead of the region as a whole, your forums should appear to be loading normally.

We will countinue to update this thread as we progress through this situation.

-------------------------

Hey all,

Quick update, for the last 4 hours we have been being attacked (DDos) by some lovely people over at china.

We are working to resolve the problem and have some very expensive server admins on the job as well as me and matt routing them away.

Ddos are completely harmless, they are just extremely annoying and bring the server offline during it. There is around 100+ servers in the attack.

You have nothing to worry about, your files and data are secure, just may have to put up with the odd crash while we resolve it.

Please any posts about offline or crashes send them here.

Alex

-this is the official staff message and no further details will be given.

I'm sorry about that, however, we are unable to predict an attack and/or prevent them until they happen. We are working to resolve this quickly.

@Brian_Griffin

SMFNew are sorry for the disruption, we are working flat out to get this solved, DDos are very nasty and extremely hard to block against. We have a team working on it and it seems to be stable now, however, we will continue to monitor it

What actually is Ddos from CHina?

Basically some selfish people in China have decided to hit this site with a series of attacks. Kind of like a terrorist attack if you think about it but on the internet.

Quote
A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers. The term is generally used with regards to computer networks, but is not limited to this field, for example, it is also used in reference to CPU resource management.[1]

One common method of attack involves saturating the target (victim) machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

Denial-of-service attacks are considered violations of the IAB's Internet proper use policy, and also violate the acceptable use policies of virtually all Internet service providers. They also commonly constitute violations of the laws of individual nations..

So basically these people or this person has tried to completely shut this website down.

A DDOS attack is an attack on a website where a person or a group of people try to stop the website from partially working or fully working at all. If they succeed then the website will go down and possibly be unusable again. It's our job to protect the users of the website and ourselves from these people and to stop them from being able to do this again. People can DDOS for many reasons such as jealousy, anger or just boredom. We have the DDOS attack under control at the moment though and as Alex said we are looking to completely stop these people.
