Title: Outages official notice
Post by: Alex on February 26, 2011, 01:42:03 pm
Hey guys

Yesterday we found what we think is causing the load issues, there are two issues which we found;

1. It seems people have been using the servers to send spam emails, the load was caused by the running of the mail script to many thousand users at once.

2. Mass spam signups, it seems many spammers would sign up over thousands of forums causing signup emails to be sent out.

For now we have put a ban on mass mails until we implement further checks.

Hi Alex,

Just to let you know my forum http://www.dogsandco.smfnew.com is still having trouble.

I have shut down any new membership requests since most of them were spam hoping it would help us out.

I know your working on this but just wanted to update you.

Thanks for all you guys do

How many members would you say are spam, that are registering on a weekly basis?

I would get anywhere from 3-5 emails a day for new memberships, but when I would go in and look at my members list there would be even more that I had not got an email for that were allowed to register. So I'd say on average all total 30 to 35 a week.

40000 * 5 a day makes a hell of a lot. We will look into this

Hi Deb,

I've updated our anti spam system for registrations, please let me know if it has helped at all.

Thanks

After 3 days I finally got a new member notification. Due to the nature of our forum and the user name I believe its spam. Would you like me to leave it there so you can view it or should I go ahead and reject it?

We now have our spam system in place. We are catching the majority automatically and marking some we believe are spam manually. Our database is currently building, has quite a few thousand entries already. Unfortionately some may still slip though, if you believe them to be spam just suspend them yourself. You should be seeing far fewer signups, it is almost impossible to stop them all, every spammer needs to start somewhere but when it triggers our system, they are suspended on every forum by SMFNew.

I still get them occasionally, but if I refresh the page, it goes away, and usually doesn't appear for a while.

I understand, I can now access my old forum again! I will delete any spam on the forum and avoid the condition again.
