Ok, not sure why.... but as well as adding links to my topic titles, this ad software in now also taking over links that my members have in their sigs!!
A mod maker on my forum, has this link in his sig https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/vapesmarter (https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/vapesmarter)
Yep when I click on it, it take me here http://www.viglink.com/shop/query/shop%2Cvapesmarter
My forum is being literally highjacked by viglink!! Can something please be done about this?
-
That is the default setting with advertising on the forums.
-
You're kidding me!! It changes peoples signature links???
-
Yes it changes any link to affiliate links if is merchant that is in the program.
-
Well I don't mind the ads appearing at the top of the pages, but to physically change my content isn't really acceptable.
I don't believe there is anywhere in the registration agreement that states members agreeing to having their posts and links altered.
Not impressive really.
-
I don't suppose you would be willing to release my SQL database would you? If so is there a fee involved?
-
The fee is $50 for the database backup. It is modified and I can't provide support beyond that other than giving the sql file.
-
How do you mean 'modified'?
-
It's not 100% standard SMF
-
So it wouldn't work uploading it to an SMF forum then?
-
I really am gutted about this... I'm not moaning at you guys, but I cant have ad revenue links taking over my members links... its not on really. I loved this hosting, but unfortunately not at that cost, I love my members more.
-
I sent a request to viglink to have them optout of the shopping pages. So it should go directly to the link. Still affiliated but you notice the extra hop anymore hopeful
-
Not sure what you mean opt out of the shopping pages? This link from viglink has taken over a members signature link... its his own link and not an affiliate link.
-
Yeah it auto does links like ebay amazon, etsy
-
Ok so back to the previous question. Will my sql file work with a fresh install of SMF?
-
Not without some changes.
-
What changes.... you are very vague with your replies, and I'm getting the feeling that you really don't want to help.
Ok i need to head off to bed.... If... the sql database will transfer all of my posts and boards over to a new install of SMF then I will pay the $50. But I need some kind of reassurance that it will work. If not, then I'm sorry its not worth it.
-
The problem at hand is that SMFNew uses a rather modified framework with SMF as its foundation. If you were to transfer your forum to another host, it'd lose a lot of functionality even if you're able to get it to install properly. You'd end up having to install various mods to SMF itself to get some of the features we have available. And there'd be no guarantee everything would install properly with the level of modification our forums have.
That being said, it'd probably more worthwhile to purchase one of our ad-free plans. Going for the Ultimate Plan is the best deal if you're going to do this, as it gives you features other than the ad-free credits, such as adding custom smiley packs, posting your own ads, a classifieds system, the downloads feature, the removal of the SMFNew branding at the bottom of the forum, etc.
-
So its a no on the database then. Never mind, I will start from scratch. I cannot commit to the amount you want for pro hosting pm. I don't need classified ads, or downloads, or mass email. And I have already purchased the smiley pack.
-
Well, to be fair, finding a host that costs less than our Ultimate Plan can be difficult. And if you're able to find a free/cheaper host, setting up an SMF forum can also be troublesome at times if you're unsure of how to handle the backend of web hosting. SMFNew is here so that people who aren't willing to deal with the backend of forum hosting can enjoy having their own forum. We have other ad-free plans if the Ultimate Plan isn't something you want to go for, such as the Unlimited Ad-Free plan or the smaller plans. I just recommended Ultimate Hosting because it's the best deal overall.
-
Thanks for the reply Jacob, but to be fair I don't need half of the stuff that you're offering, and $15 a month just for no ads, is out of my price league, plus I don't have total control. To know that if I can't afford the credits one month then my forum content is going to be altered for your ads to display is not something that I want.
I appreciate your time, and thanks for the replies.
-
I understand, and sorry we can't help further. We have to be able to fund this service which is why we do what we do, but I understand that it can be inconvenient for the average user. So thanks for the feedback, we'll take it into consideration. :)
-
I totally understand about funding the hosting, and if the ads weren't so intrusive (altering my post titles, and changing members links) it really wouldn't have been a problem. A banner or ads at the top of the page, the bottom or even sides wouldn't have bothered us. So yep maybe this would be something you could sort for future forum hosts.
Thanks again guys, your free forum software is actually amazing with so many great features. I will be sad to leave :(
-
Like I mentioned, we will definitely consider your feedback so thank you for voicing your opinion. :) It's a shame to lose you, hopefully you'll be able to return someday!
-
You never know. I shall certainly recommend you to anyone wanting to make a free forum ;)
-
We would certainly appreciate that, thank you!

Hi kisrooster,
Please create a new support topic for any questions you may have, so that we can dedicate proper attention to your question instead of using a solved support topic.
Thanks!
