My IP was banned. Why?
« on: November 02, 2011, 02:07:44 am »
Hello, my name is Solomon.
A friend of mine and I recently started a new forum with your service (located HERE). We got started around yesterday, setting everything up. I made one post on the boards, and when I went to make a second post, I was informed by THIS PAGE that I had been banned for spamming one of SMFNEW's forums. I assume there must be some sort of confusion, as it said the ban was made manually, which would mean - I hope - that a human moderator/administrator made the decision to ban me, based on one post.
I have looked around to see if I may have inadvertently violated one of your rules, and I do not believe I have. As I said, I made one post, and assume that since it wasn't deleted along with my being banned, that it was not the reason why. Thus, why I believe that this is just some simple mix-up.

The following is the copied message I received from the ban page.
"The IP address XX.XXX.XXX.XXX was banned on Nov 1, 2011 for spamming one of our forums.

This ban was generated manually by an SMFNEW Administrator. We checked what you were trying to post and it was flagged as inappropriate. We also verified that your IP address was associated with forum spam.

The reason for this specific ban: You have posted material that violated our terms of service."

I would simply like to know what happened and why (specifically), and if my ban can be lifted. If it cannot, please let me know, because I guess we would have to move the forums to another service, as I am an administrator, without the ability to administrate.

With regards, Solomon.

I do not intend to come off as impatient, but I have checked every other thread on the Feedback boards front page, and noticed an average response time of approximately one day. Three have now passed, and I have not received a response to my inquiry. Can I expect to hear anything about my issue any time within the week?

I've informed an administrator of this. Please await their response.

Have you gone through the appeal process?

Thanks

Yes, I have. I have not received anything in my E-mail inbox, as of yet.

Thank you.

Okay... Two weeks have passed since I was banned for apparently [censored] and giggles, and I have yet to get any kind of response as to if this is being dealt with. I would at least like an answer to if this will or will not be handled, so that we can go ahead with moving the forums or not, from your service.

So far, I am sorry to say, my impression is wholly unsatisfactory.

Please, refrain from the language. Not only does it get you nowhere, but it also can be offensive to other users. Yes, I realize the censor picked it up, but people could tell what you wrote, since you left three of the letters from the word in it without the stars.

Try going through the appeal thing again, see if that works.

Sorry that your impression of our service isn't the best - we try to make all of our users happy, but unfortunately, that's just not always possible. If you have any suggestions or feedback, feel free to let us know! :)

Good on ya. Problem solved, finally. Thank you for fixing it!

Thank you for that suggestion. Before the problem was fixed and on an irregular basis I would file for an appeal. It didn't seem to work. However, thank you again for the suggestion.

Thank you for asking, as well as fixing my problem!
It would be rude of me not to speak honestly. How else do we strive for betterment?

1.) You exchange the word "manual" in your ban message to "automatic(ally)".

2.) Faster customer response time. A couple of days is fine enough for the internet, but weeks is trying anyone's patience. You don't have to fix a customers problem, half the job is letting them know you heard them, and will have it looked into. Not every problem can, or will be fixed right away, so letting them know they are now sort of on queue can work wonders. We are (most of us) raised in societies that teach us to wait in line for our turn. When you do not inform someone that they are in a queue, they tend to think you are either ignoring them, or incompetent.

3.) Return feedback. This being the "Feedback" boards, posting a reply (after step two) that someone is actually looking into the problem works wonders. Waiting for customers to confront you is not the happiest way to do business. The customer doesn't always have to be right or first, but they do have to be a priority. At the very least, communication with them does.

I am not being snarky. I am speaking from the point of view of someone who has done customer service, sales, marketing, as well as law enforcement. The less agitated you can keep a situation, the easier it is to handle. No one likes being on hold with customer service for hours at a time, which translate into weeks online.

Oh come on!

I finally have my ban lifted and things are starting to look up, I make one post and get banned... again.

And before you ask, I have sent ban appeals in quintuplicate, just to make sure.
I am also PMing you my IP, as previously requested.

Home, dynamic IP, paid for by me. I don't see why this keeps happening. My network is secure, and I am crazy insane about keeping it that way. There is no way that I, or any of the other two computers on my home network could be spamming your forums.

I just talked with my friend, who started the forums with me. He mentioned that it might have something to do with him altering my post count on the first day we opened the forums to five-hundred, from my actual count of two, through the Administrative console.
Could this be what has been causing this problem?
I'm not entirely sure, since he did the same thing to his own post count.

I don't think that should be causing the issue, but I may be wrong.

What I am confused about is, is this your forums? Second, it could be bad since he recently started his forums. If I am correct, can't you request to change the name of your forums once you have achieved 500 posts or more on your forums? If it is under isn't it free of charge? This has never happened to me even when I joked around about it. Maybe there is a pesky little glitch somewhere in there. Give me a link and maybe I could poke around on your forums and see what I can find.

We're pretty confident that our software is in working order, but I suppose there's always room for error.
