The blue cloud message appears to be served up by a router type gizmo, but the "sorry but SMF was unable to connect" message is generated by your board, so your board IS online.

It's just a matter of matching up the board's Server Settings to match the new location of the database server, and I expect Alex has to match up each board's Server Settings one by one at this point.  It's actually a good sign that we're on the downhill side of this problem.

In regard to this:

Blah blah not easy hosting that many forums, whatever. You're singing from the same hymn sheet because you haven't got a clue what's going on.

"Sorry guys this is doing my head in, taking ages", not exactly an update. Surely he has a better timescale like next week, next month, next year?

Just an ESTIMATE of when it's going to be fixed, because THIS IS A JOKE.

You either need to use the profit you're making to hire more administrators to sort out your issues or find better administrators and sort it out.

EDIT: It took nearly 10 minutes and 2 "error" pages to post this, you guys really need to sort your crap out. Why people choose you is beyond me.

EDIT: You're hosting 58,231 free forums with 5,097,237 posts. To my recollection, not all of these forums are down because of the server issue therefore your post is incorrect. Get me an answer from Alex or whoever runs this ****.

I want to state that whatever I've posted in that guy's thread was not a complaint but an observation about his situation, which remains his situation and not mine.

I don't complain about my free hosted forum because it's free.

But I know where this guy is coming from because he's paid money, and I know where he's coming from because people with forums have communities that are at risk of being lost because of forum unreliability, even if the community is on a free hosted forum.

Look at it this way--some of us on free hosted forums are giving SMFNew a trial before shelling out money, and any grief that paying members get even after paying is a disincentive for free hosted boards to go Pro.  If a free hosted board loses people from the community due to unreliability, it's a cost to the free board all the same when people are lost from the community.

When people pay for an account, support is paid for, and that includes getting notices about server situations.  Especially getting notices about server situations.  I'd like to pitch in and help out if I could but staffers also have developed a lousy "bedside manner" when I do.

Fine, be that way.

I'll just run my li'l community and mind my own beezwax, but so help me if I lose any of my people....

Quoting this for a feedback post then will come back to post a link to it.

Why dont you just make the size smaller?
As logo spaces go, that's a little one. I know other themes allow bigger spaces than that....which is why I suggested a different theme. No doubt that theme was designed with the presumption that a person could diddle with the template and had no idea that as-is would be forced on anyone.

First, a disclaimer: I'm not a member of SMFNew support staff.

Second, I've seen this problem before and the solution lies in altering your Current Theme template php file, which is clipping your banner.

If you don't have a Pro account here, you can't alter that file or the CSS file either. If you do, you can go to your Admin panel, click on Current Theme, and somewhere in the bottom third of your template file you'll find the section you need to change the logo offsets.

If you don't have a Pro account, you might want to shop around from the available Theme choices and choose the one that accommodates your banner better. Different themes allow different spaces for logos (banners).

True, and I've used PCs ever since only IBM made 'em and used MSDOS 1.2....and...I happen to know that MSDOS 1.0 was actually CP/M. I know Bill Gates is no genius.

The person below thinks Gates IS a genius.

Suggestions / Re: Arcade Mod
« on: September 08, 2012, 05:34:48 pm »
Its not compatible with 2.0.1 or 2.0.2

It appears to be compatible with both of those when you choose to parse. It wasn't when I decided to pull the plug on my paid-host SMF board, which was 2RC2. And one of the reasons I decided to do that was that I needed to upgrade to SMF 2 but there was no arcade for it.  If I can't have an arcade, then SMFNew free hosted board was a better option than paying to host a no-arcade board.

So...the plug has been pulled and NOW niko has an updated arcade. Foo.

People looking for games can find them at Wolfpack Arcade, and unless niko's updated arcade can handle something other than zip files, you'll need a converter for converting tar to zip. From my old board I've got over 500 such games already converted stashed on some drive somewhere. :(

As is the case with other boards that have downloadable games, you do need to register, post a minimum number of messages in the forum area, and stay within a daily download limit (unless you go premium membership).  It has one of the most ample download policies out there, though. The best.

I'm familiar with the error, as I have gotten that quite a bit in the past.  I know that it's related to server work so I just go with the flow because I've seen the error clear up, too.

But then again, I'm a free hosted account, too. I suppose I'd be more irate if I were a paying customer, but it's one of those deals that can be chalked up to "growing pains" of a recent startup operation.

I follow SMFNew on both Twitter and Facebook, noting with interest that only the Twitter account released information on what's going on at HQ, and that was quite some time ago.  Checking the SMFNew account on Facebook, there was still no new update but there was a person declaring that he was contemplating moving.

It seems to me that just keeping customers well informed and updated on what's going on would go a long, long way towards keeping feathers less ruffled.

The key word is emergency. It was kind of on-the-spot, so that's why we weren't entirely focused on making certain that we broadcast it to every social media outlet. The repair work should fix most future speed problems.
I don't get the reasoning there. An emergency is the best reason to put an announcement out not just on Twitter but Facebook too.  When I visited the Facebook page, there were a lot of inquiries...left unanswered.

I can tell you that regarding my own community, that's the FIRST thing I did. You gotta care about your people if you want to keep 'em.

I know this to be the case because somebody at least Tweeted that information. People going to SMFNew's Facebook page were still out of luck.  You'd think that a conscientious site host would put the word out in more than one place. Meh.

False.  Used to have pets, though, and prefer cats.

False, because I grew up when the military DRAFTED people.  When you grow up during the DRAFT, you develop a better appreciation for Selective Service, believe me.

The person below has developed more tolerance for the Selective Service because he knows it's better than any draft, ever.

Support / Re: How do i center the logo pn my forum?
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:37:36 pm »
Uh-oh.
I went and checked Current Theme and by golly you're right about the edit CSS and edit Template being missing. Whoa!

Here's something else you can do: if you have an image editor like GIMP and can work with png images, you can fake-center your logo by placing just the letters of the logo on a transparent png backdrop with a good left margin offset. You won't change coding but it'll look centered.

==========================================

Editorial: I can understand how keeping server space for free hosted boards limited by disallowing upload of customizing images is understandable, but denying access to modifying the template or CSS via the Admin control panel>Current Theme seems overly harsh IMHO.
