I currently operate an SMF 2.0 forum for free support of an open-source software package and am looking for an alternative host. I have a few questions about SMFNew:
- I expect to be operating my forum for another 20 years. What are your plans for the longevity of the SMFNew site?
- My current forum has 7.5k members and 48k posts. Can I migrate all accounts and posts to a free SMFNew account? If not, what is the cost for this? Is there a limit on the size of the database for a free SMFNew forum?
- I read in a post here that SQL database download is a paid feature. Where is this explained, and what is the cost?
TIA for your answers.

1. I have been running createaforum.com for over 10 years. I would probably migrate you to that SMF based platform as it has all the features.
20 years is a long time to say, it depends on how the internet changes. I can say for sure we will be around at least 5 to 10 years more.
2.Yes, we just need the database dump. No cost. No limit on size of database. There are limits on attachment space.
3. One time fee for database export of $50 includes attachments and other site files.

Thanks for your fast response.
I'll look into createaforum.com.

What is this limit? Are the attachments dumped with the "Backup Database" SMF feature if I check all the boxes? Here is the size of my uncompressed dump:
> ls -l ~/Desktop/smf-complete_2019-10-30.sql

And one more question: Where do I send my database dump for starting a new forum on createaforum.com ?
-
The default limit for attachment space I believe is 25mb but can be upgraded.
Attachments are not backed up using the SMF feature to backup the database. I also don't recommend using that feature for large forums as sometimes the database dump is not complete.
You would need to send over the attachments folder as well.
To send the database email to create@createaforum.com or you can pm me a link to it. Please zip up the file.
Also signup for a forum on createaforum.com and send me your forum url.

Thanks.
If you don't recommend the SMF backup feature, then what do you recommend? This is what I do personally for forum backup:
mysqldump -u mysql -p smf > smf.dump
(plus backing up the attachments folder, which I plan to clean up a bit before migration)

MySQL dump is fine or adminer, phpmyadmin.

OK, thanks. Now I just need to work out how to change all of the URL's in forum posts to the new domain.

That's somewhat easy to do with msyql replace statement

Great. Thanks for the tip!

Contact me when you send it over.

Will do. But it will be a while before I am ready.

Ok sounds good.
