General Discussion / Merry Christmas?
« on: June 17, 2009, 02:19:41 pm »
(First seen on "The One Show" on BBC1, and then used an article from Daily Mail.)

It may not be too late to send the presents back, as astronomers have calculated that Christmas should not be celebrated on December 25 - but on June 17 instead.

Researchers tracked the appearance of the 'Christmas star', which the Bible states three wise men followed to find Jesus.

Australian stargazer Dave Reneke used complex computer software to chart the exact positions of all celestial bodies and map the night sky as it would have appeared over the Holy Land more than 2,000 years ago.

He discovered that a bright star really did appear over Bethlehem 2,000 years ago - but pinpointed the date of Christ's birth as June 17, and not December 25.

Scientists claim the Christmas star was most likely a magnificent conjunction of the planets Venus and Jupiter, which were so close together they would have shone unusually brightly as a single 'beacon of light' which appeared suddenly.

Mr Reneke says the wise men probably interpreted it as the sign they had been waiting for, and they followed the 'star' to Christ's birthplace in a stable in Bethlehem, as described in the Bible.

Generally accepted research has placed the nativity to somewhere between 3BC and 1AD.

Using the St Matthew's Gospel as a reference point, Mr Reneke pinpointed the planetary conjunction, which appeared in the constellation of Leo, to the exact date of June 17 in the year 2BC.

Mr Reneke, who is editor of Sky and Space magazine, said: 'We have software that can recreate the night sky exactly as it was at any point in the last several thousand years.

'Venus and Jupiter became very close in the the year 2BC and they would have appeared to be one bright beacon of light.

'We are not saying this was definitely the Christmas star - but it is the strongest explanation for it of any I have seen so far.

'Astronomy is such a precise science, we can plot exactly where the planets were, and it certainly seems this is the fabled Christmas star. There's no other explanation that so closely matches the facts we have from the time.

'This could well have been what the three wise men interpreted as a sign. They could easily have mistaken it for one bright star.'

He added: 'December is an arbitrary date we have accepted but it doesn't really mean that is when it happened.

'This is not an attempt to decry religion. It's really backing it up as it shows there really was a bright object appearing in the East at the right time.

'Often when we mix science with religion in this kind of forum, it can upset people. In this case, I think this could serve to reinforce people's faith.'

Previous theories have speculated that the star was a supernova (exploding star) or even a comet.

But Mr Reneke says that by narrowing the date down, the technology has provided the most compelling explanation yet.
A leading theory behind why December 25 was chosen as the date to celebrate Christ's birth, was that it was selected by the church as it aligned closely with a major pagan festival, which allowed the church to claim a new celebration for Christianity.
However, if the findings are correct, it would mean a change from Christmas cards featuring traditional snowy scenes to sunny beach views in June.

« on: May 06, 2009, 12:51:02 pm »
The style "reGrey" wont show the forum title at the top of the page (Where it would say "Forum - Index"), it comes up with the forum URL instead. Whilst all other styles display the forum title.

Is this a problem you can fix?

Hey Matt/Alex,
I know phpBB updates have been "stopped", however, in your quest to keep all of your forums spam free, I believe you should install these two MOD's:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=1545695
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=645075&hilit=anti+bot+question

In fact, I think you only need to add one, because there both as helpful as another.

Thanks,

Forum Games / Cheeseburger game!
« on: April 14, 2009, 03:41:46 pm »
Now, on other sites I've visited this has been a fairly funny game, it's called the Cheeseburger game, here are a few examples:

1) Charlie from All Dogs Go to Heaven:
"Oi! You there! I'll have a cheeseburger!"

2) Jenna from Balto:
"Cheeseburger! Kodiak, come here!"

3) Jack's friend off of the Titanic:
"Cheeseburgers to drown by, now I know I'm in first class".

Okay, now it's the real thing:

Queen Elizabeth II, from "The Queen":
"So your not a Cheeseburger then?"

General Discussion / 97 Years... and the Nightmare continues!
« on: April 14, 2009, 03:34:36 pm »
97 years after the White Star Line ship, the RMS Titanic is still the most well-known shipping disaster in history, and tonight, marks 97 years, after the un-sinkable ship, sank, into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Here is my summary of what happened:
The Original Plan:
The original plan for the Titanic was far less luxary then it actually was. They where to have 48 wooden lifeboats, + 12 collapsables. The water-tight bulkheads where to raise to B deck. Also, the ship was going to have three funnels.

The Ismay plan:
The Ismay plan for the Titanic was almost-perfect for Luxary, but bad for safety. The isay plan lowered lifeboats to 16, and 4 collapsables. The water-tight Bulkheads where also lowered to serve only 10 feet above the water-line at E-deck. And at last, a fouth funnel was added to make the ship look more powerful.

The poor rivets:
The Titanic was made with steele plates around the sides, held together my Steele, and Iron rivets. There are 5 different types of Iron "Number 0", "Number 1", "Number 2", "Number 3" and "Number 4"(Otherwise known as "Best Best", and what you would use on your "Iron"). Half of the ships rivets where steele, however the other was Number 3 (Or "Best") Iron rivets. Which where not even the purist, Number 4 was the best set of Iron rivets, however still very weak.

The Officer Switch:
As you may know, the Captain was EJ (Edward John) Smith, Cheif Officer Wilde, first officer Murdoch, and second officer Lightoller. BUT, what was the original plan?

Well, Captain EJ Smith would of had:
Cheif Officer: Murdoch
First officer: Lightoller
Second Officer: Blinde (Or something)
Exc.

However due to the ship "Olympic" was taken to H&W shipyard, there chief officer took over Murdoch's post.

The lifeboats:
Heroic, pathetic, Titanic. As you would of heard, boats where being launched HALF-full. However Murdoch was a hero, you may have never head of this, but it's true. He was lowering his 3rd boat when Lightoller was barely lowering his first. Also, he died fighting to save a lifeboat, a quote from Lightoller said:
Quote
I saw William at lifeboat post 1, lowering one of collapsables, but this went wrong, when water flooded that area, they couldn't release the lifeboat. I saw Murdoch fighting the sea's power to save lives. But this massive wave threw him away, and he fell into a depth of no return. This was the last I saw of William Murdoch.

And Bride said the same.

Other Information:
If you would like any more information about the Olympic, Titanic and/or the Britannic. Please ask me here (For Titanic) or PM me (for all of them)
