Hypercrites -- for political animals :)
« on: July 12, 2012, 03:10:34 pm »
It gets rough here and that's why we have a Rubber Room.

Insofar that freedom of speech doesn't get either me or the host into legal trouble, freedom of speech reigns supreme on this forum which has members from now-defunct forums like Arianna Online (Huffington dropped it when she founded the Huffington Post) and Air America's official forum, Air America Place,  and PBS Discussions, dropped by PBS.

Hypercrites has also been a refuge of people who get banned from other political boards--we love our trolls here--which is why it's also called "the land of the banned".

If you can handle the freedom, come on over and join us in spirited political discourse.

Political animals already know about Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post and Air America, and the fact that Arianna changed from conservative to liberal. These are boards which also curtailed the postings of conservatives considerably, and those conservatives are now denizens of Hypercrites. Of course we have liberals and independents, too, but on the whole we're pretty much already familiar with each other. We have one member from Ed Schultz' old board, but that board, on the whole, has migrated to their own website, Radio Free Liberal--on which are some folks from Air America Place.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have an anti-spammer procedure in place because I've gotten a lot of spammer registrations: when you first register, you're a restricted Newbie that can post only in Introductions and if I don't already know you from another political board, you're required to post an introduction so that I can know for a fact to my satisfaction that you're not a spammer.  I then manually upgrade you to the Hypercritter membergroup with full board access.

Are you trying to get me banned by Governments?! The land of the banned...

Well I guess even the banned need places to chat! Keep up the good work!

lol!  Thank you.

I just mean people banned off of other political boards because of their political views, people banned for trolling and such when the other board is run by a majority of one side or the other.

Haha, I like sharing my opinion on politics for the most part. I'm very strong in my opinions, and being a monarchist, I dislike almost all other forms of government. :P I'd join, but it sounds more like this board is more for republics and supporters of republics. ;)

And about your anti-spam technique - I have to say that your idea is very clever! I never thought of that! :)

Thank you very much. My board has been hosted by GoDaddy for several years, and would still be today if SMF upgrading hadn't become a major issue since I also had an arcade and there's no good arcade mod for 2.x and hasn't been. And so I stuck with 2CR2 until it just couldn't work anymore. It was rendered inoperable by new IP standards, alas. I wasn't going to pay GoD for that.

Anyway, I've had years of spammer attack experience as well as a lengthy piece of experience with gri, and I'm sure you know who that is. Everybody who has ever run an SMF board has probably encountered this guy.  I learned a LOT about board security just from these experiences.

And so I find myself here with my long-established community and with redirects to somebody else's awesome arcade boards.

Even if you're a monarchist, if you have a political opinion you're welcome on my board. ^_^

Haha, gri. :P Yeah - I know who he is, but I don't know what his purpose on forums is, and I don't have the faintest clue what he's talking about most of the time because he doesn't dumb down his posts enough for me. :P

I might join, but like I always say - I haven't had a whole lot of time outside of SMFNew and normal life recently, so I probably wouldn't post a whole lot for some time. :)

No prob. It's not for everybody so I don't expect people to beat down the door to get in. Non-spammer real people, that is.

I've always registered on every board gri has set up on a free host site, and he gets banned every time...which makes him an ideal denizen in the Land of the Banned. His boards invariably end up being a honeypot, if you know what I mean, and that's the thing that gets him banned every time. However, those boards provided valuable info to me on spambot behavior, and it's why I have my own anti-spammer measures set up the way I do.

Yup--I've spent the time and effort to de-code gri, and I've come away with valuable information in that process. One important piece of information worth sharing with you good folks is that when you always deny a newly registered newbie the ability to view other people's profiles, newly registered spammers get disinclined to post spam.  Spam is not Job One--it's data mining. And the rate of spammer registrations go down, too.

The door that's left open for spammers to post is SMF's Default setting for forum boards, too. Setting up Membergroup Profiles and setting each of your boards to a Profile instead of Default works wonders, too.
