Just to let you know this is how my forum is beginning to look:

1.  Meanwhile, I don't quite understand the Smilies section.  eg:  This.  It appears that I have a choice of 3 sets, but can I download the Cat in the Hat smiley set?

2.  I don't understand what are Spiders?

3.  VIP to me is the membergroups.  Basically I have two boards.  One Charlesonian and the second Diana-ites.  I don't want members being able to access both these boards.  I want them to be able to select one board which applies to them.  Now I have set up a membergroup for both, but how do I go about in keeping these members from posting on both boards?

Is it something to do with the other membergroups checked?  eg:  Instead of having newbies with stars, I changed it to:

Commoner
Glosse Posse
Courtier
Equerry
Nobility
Aristocrat
Royalty

The above categories are post count minded.  Can you please advise me about this as I definitely want two separate boards as these two subjects have a way of causing members to clash badly.  I'm drawing on my experience from other forums.

Meanwhile, just what are Spiders?

Sorry about this, but I want to get this right and all set up before I go public with this forum.

Almost forgot, what size should my banner be?

Well thank you for that.  It worked a treat.  No more collapsible blocks.  Thank you once again.

Actually, I'm currently in the process of making a banner.  What size should it be?  Is it possible to make a small one and center it or do you have to make one that covers the width of the forum?

I did say I would be asking a lot of question in my intro so here are some of the.  Sorry!

1.  I've been tweaking SMF in order to try and learn it and I can't understand why I cannot get rid of this.  I don't want the plus or minus signs on the right hand side of my forum showing so how do I get rid of them?

The only unread posts thingy I want showing is this:  This is fine for me. I don't understand why it has to be at the side as well.

2.  Meanwhile, how do I go about downloading a gallery please?  I should like to provide members with the opportunity of choosing some avatars.

3.  As my forum shall be a Royal forum, I've deleted those sections in the membergroup which say's 'newbie' and replaced them all with; "Commoner", "Sir", "Lady", "Baron", "Baroness", etc.....   Commoner has no stars, Lady is 100 post, Baroness is 500 post and so it goes on all the way to Duke and Duchess.  However, do these membergroups automatically detect what your gender is?

4.  Also, regarding the smileys, if I download them will they automatically show up when I want to post and send a message?

Please advise, would greatly appreciate it.

No, no, SMFNew is free, but if you want mods or themes, you don't HAVE to pay for them. Here's your options if you want different mods or themes:

I think I'm not articulating myself very well.  My apologies for that.  Hard to explain computer stuff when your not computer techie.

Allow me to start again.  I signed up originally with CreateAForumforFree, because I wanted to learn a) how to start a forum and b) I needed to learn how to use the SMF package.

As it happens, I prefer this community suport forum....it looks more active.  As a result, I signed up to SMFNew (which is also free) and created a forum.  This is the forum:   http://royalmischief.smffy.com which is currently closed to viewing because I am working my way through all the features and options.  This pic gives you an idea what it looks like - but it needs loads of work

Either
1. Suggest a mod or theme in the suggestions board, where the community as a whole decides if it is to be installed or not.

or

2. Purchase our Pro Hosting package, where you have complete access to your forum, and you have your site migrated to our Pro server. With Pro Hosting, you can do literally anything that is technically possible. You can upload your own files, your own mods and themes at your whim, or you could even add your own pages to your directory to create a full website. If you would like more information on Pro Hosting, please see this article: http://wiki.smfnew.com/index.php/Pro_Hosting

Sorry, the above is where I got lost.  When you said
Quote
Suggest a mod or theme in the suggestions board
Does this mean I have to get an okay from the community in whom I ask to be a moderator?  Going through the features and options, I got the impression I could download a number of themes if I chose to.

Also, prior to purchasing the pro-hosting package, I shall be able to open to the public and invite members to join the forum shan't I?

Mstcool,

If your willing than I shall endeavour to be able.  I need all the help I can get.

So let me see if I have this right.  SMFNew is also free, but naturally if you don't want add ons then you can pay for that.  Is that right?

By the way, how many posts do I make before the capta is taken off?

Oh wait.....is SMFNew a host site?  I was under the impression it's where newbies like me come to ask general questions about SMF?

I am aware this is not Create a Forum.  I was under the impression this is where newbies like myself go in order to ask questions about SMF?

Support / Keeping Members Apart
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:10:02 pm »
Hello,

I've already introduced myself in the relevant thread.  The question I would most like an answer to is the one which caused me to think if I could set up my own forum in the first place and it is this;

I got so ticked off with the divisions on the forum of which I am a member, I wondered if it is possible to keep them apart?

eg:  Say I was setting up a forum about music, and the Pro-Country Music fans and Anti-Country Music fans were continuously at loggerheads and I want to keep them apart, is it possible to create 2 boards.  1) Pro-Country & 2) Anti-Country?  If so how would I go about it?  I've already tweaked around with the Membergroups and that's not working unless of course I'm doing something wrong.

What I should like is to prevent one group of members posting in a boards which I would prefer them not to.  I thought this was what membergroups were for, but it isn't.  Unless of course once again I am doing something wrong.

Can you please help?

Hello everyone,

It was Mstcool who referred me here.  I was over at the main community support group when he/she spotted me.

Basically, I'm a computer ignoramus  and am trying to teach myself how to set up a forum using SMF2.  I found a site called Create Forums for Free and set up a test site there so as I can teach myself how it's done.  Don't know if I shall stay there, but I needed to set up a test site in order to build up my confidence which has improved slightly.

Am now looking around to find out how I can download a gallery, insert thumbnails at the side where the board headings are and trying to work out how membergroups work.

Be warned, I shall be asking you a load of questions.  So please forgive me.
