SMFNew 1 - Attackers 0
« on: December 27, 2010, 01:28:43 pm »
SMFNew been slow over the last few days? Down for most of today? We apologise for this, we had to defend from a sophisticated DDOS attack.

We believe we have won the attack and will continue to monitor the situation, we have also included some extra measures to stop this happening in the future.

As SMFNew grows so will the attacks, we plan to stay ahead of them.

Thanks,

SMFNew

Ah man, good luck! I hate hackers and spammers. I had a spammer attack on a forum I administrate, and I first set it so guest posts had to have approval to post, then I totally disabled guest posting.

This is slightly different to spammers, spammers are there to irritate and post spam. The attackers were performing a DDOS (denial of service). It's aim is to get 100s of IP's, which are servers and computers to all load the same website multiple times a second (for example if you could sit there and press f5 50 times a second). This causes so much traffic to the server the server simply says no and shuts down. We have measures in place, however, it is quite hard to predict and defend a DDOS as you end up banning normal users, the best way to defend from an attack is while the attack is taking place. We do have measures in place and will be testing efficiency over the next few days.

I know what a DDOS is, but I was just saying that I hate spammers, as I have only experienced them with my forums. (I hope to never have my forum hacked.)

Is there any way to track them? I was thinking it was illegal to DDOS; you could have the FBI track them down!

Unfortunately the FBI will not bother about petty things, only when is there the loss of money / collateral damage will they get involved. Depending on their experience it will probably be more advance than just requesting the page hundreds of time, it's likely they are SYN Flooding which will overrun your buffers and potentially allow them to root your servers - serious stuff.

Like all cyber-nuisances, these people need to find something better to do with their loads of spare time. Waiting and waiting and waiting for SMFnew to load is wasting our limited spare time.

Your limited spare time? Smfnew loads heaps fast for me. Check your Internet connection before you blame it on smfnew.
