Some kind of warning from Google
« on: June 03, 2017, 02:47:48 am »
After adding the google verification to the header on my forum, I had this appear in google toolbox.

To: owner of  Beginning in January 2017, Chrome (version 56 and later) will mark pages that collect passwords or credit card details as “Not Secure” unless the pages are served over HTTPS. The following URLs include input fields for passwords or credit card details that will trigger the new Chrome warning. Review these examples to see where these warnings will appear, and so you can take action to help protect users’ data. The list is not exhaustive. http://ceekaysvapeshack.smfnew2.com/general-vape-chat/
Bearing in mind I'm not collecting any passwords or credit card details... the only password my members have to input is on registration. Any idea's why I'm getting this or even how I can fix it?

I believe this has to do with the SSL encryption that many sites use. If you check to the left of the URL you have in your address bar, if there's a gray circle with a lowercase "i" inside, you can click that and change site permissions (can it access your location, your microphone, etc), how many cookies are being used by the site, site settings within the browser, as well as whether or not the site is secured with SSL. When a site is not secured with SSL, it will say "Your connection to this site is not secure". On the other side, if a site is secured with SSL, the "i" icon won't be there: it will be replaced with a green padlock followed by the text "Secure", then it will show you "https://" in green like that, followed by your URL.

It shouldn't be anything to worry about. :) The only issue might be for users who use the same password across multiple websites, as if a hacker intercepts their connection, it's possible they may obtain that data. It's not a good idea to use the same password across multiple sites, however, even if SSL is enabled.

Addendum: Just a general web browsing tip. It's not a good idea to use credit cards (and especially not debit cards) on pages that aren't secured with SSL. For example, if you use Amazon, you'll notice they have SSL encryption thus your transaction is safe from hackers. Otherwise, you could be leaving yourself open for a hacker to intercept and steal your card number.

Yeah it is something I am looking into it. I might have to use just SSL on login/registration pages. It is nothing to worry about though.

Ahh so long as google won't penalise me for it, all is good.
Thanks for the replies both. Do you think it would be possible to have a secure log in page?

Maybe I am still working on it... It won't be as nice as the one we have now but it will be secure.
