Our Forum has been down since Monday evening
« on: September 27, 2012, 05:11:19 pm »
Our Forum has been down since Monday evening, I wasn't told about it by Members until Wednesday morning. I also haven't been able to access the support forum since yesterday morning and finally got in here this evening.

At first I was getting the blue screen with the white cloud that said data base error. Today I am getting the following

"Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later. "

Our forum is http://www.dogsandco.smfnew.com

If I'm not mistaken it has to do with the recent server move SMFNew has been doing. I believe the majority of forums have had this problem (on the free service) - mine included. The error message flips between the 2 you mentioned from my experience.

The blue cloud message appears to be served up by a router type gizmo, but the "sorry but SMF was unable to connect" message is generated by your board, so your board IS online.

It's just a matter of matching up the board's Server Settings to match the new location of the database server, and I expect Alex has to match up each board's Server Settings one by one at this point.  It's actually a good sign that we're on the downhill side of this problem.
You can PM me questions about SMF.

I understand everyone's frustration and the server move threw up some unexpected problems however i can assure you that we are working extremely hard to get everything back up and running.

Trax:
I'm sure you all have been working extremely hard -- it's always frustrating when you have a server that is down or a rebuild or move that goes bad.
However, I'm also sure that BP was working extremely hard during the Gulf Coast oil spill -- but they still understood the value of attempting to keep the community informed of what was going on.
You and Jaekob keep mentioning a server move. Did I miss the message that there was going to be a server move that MIGHT cause an interruption of service. I even checked www.twitter.com/smfnew and didn't see any information there.
I checked this support forum (after my site went down) and nothing here.
I, for one, didn't even know if SFMNEW was still in business or whether you had shuttered the doors.  I did get some email addresses from a prior host site so that I could email senior users and let them know that the problem wasn't limited to our site and they hadn't been banned, but that I had no other information about what might be going on or how long it might take.
I'm not overly frustrated, my life doesn't depend on the forum. This did point out disadvantages of not having a backup of my forum.

There was no official announcement for the move, it all happened on the spur of the moment and even staff at first did not no the move was going ahead. In all honesty Jaekob and i only know as much as you guys do at this point and we are doing our best to try to inform you all on a daily basis.

I appreciate all your help. :)

I too checked twitter and the facebook page and there was nothing. Then when I couldn't even get into support I figured something massive had happened.

At least I know your working on it and I can pass it on to my members

Thanks again

Jim, we're here for the long run. You can be assured of that. :) It's just that sometimes issues like this come up so unexpectedly, and that's why we haven't exactly kept you up-to-date. We apologise for not being able to update you, because honestly, all we can say is that it's still being worked on.

The server move itself is over, and only affected forums at a random rate inflicting short-term outages as they were being transferred. The move was 100% necessary for the long-term operations of SMFNew. The trouble is that when we moved to the new server, the DNS had to update for every one of the forums, and sometimes errors occur. I assure you that Alex is still working with our server techs to ensure everything is fixed. As I've said before, once these issues are fixed, things will go back to normal. :) Yes, we realise that it's very frustrating to not even be able to access your forum, and that it's frustrating that we've not been able to update you on what's going on, but we really appreciate any patience that you can give us. We're working as hard as we all can to keep SMFNew going. :)

@Debs - Yes, you can assure them that Alex is working with the server techs to ensure things are fixed. You can also assure them that things will be back to normal soon. We can't give an exact time schedule because sometimes technology mucks up, but we're rather confident that the issues will be fixed soon. :)

3 days ago, at around 4 a.m. local time, I experienced SMFnew like never before. Pages loaded instantly and viewing threads was a breeze. I thought the forum move was completed and I took the step to inform every member of my community the problems were fixed. 20 minutes later, every single thing I posted got roll backed to the day when a java code started displaying above the forum.

When we got smf new, it was everything we ever wanted. We waited patiently for the pro-hosting pay pal cart to fully function, yet it never did. We even bought a .net domain to request the name server domain transfer, yet it never was completed.

I'm running out of options because I moved from another, actually credible, free forum provider to this one with the expectancy of an even better experience. Boy, was I mistaken.

We apologise for all of the inconvenience this has caused, and we can assure that once these issues are fixed, it's likely that we will never have to do a move like this again, and things will go back to normal.

This has been a frustrating move, for both you as users, and us as the host. The move took a long time to complete, and the move itself is actually completed - we're just sorting out some issues with the forums that occurred during the move. As far as we know, the issues are near-fixed.

Once again, we all apologise for the inconvenience this whole move has caused. It's been a chaotic time for us at SMFNew recently, we're trying as hard as we can to ensure that the future of SMFNew is secure. Please stay patient with us - we're trying as hard as we can. :)

Mines been down too. Its running SMF2.0.1 (i wanted to upgrade but im not offcialy in control of the site so i can't) could the fact it wasn't running SMF2.0.2 caused it to kick the error.

The version your running as nothing to do with it. We have moved servers and are working on the database issues. You are also running the latest version of SMF. SMF 2.0.2 is simply a patch and we see no reason to install it at this point.

Eddie, we would update you on FB/Twitter, but we'd only be repeating ourselves on what we've already said. There's unfortunately not much we can tell you, other than "We're still working on it", and that means we'd really just be wasting our time repeating ourselves. Rest assured, we ARE still working on the issue. :)
