News & Updates / [APRIL FOOL'S] SMFNew Voice(TM)!
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:18:13 am »

Hello everyone!

Today is a monumental day in SMFNew history. As we stated at the launch of SMFNew 2, we aim to continue to bring innovative changes to our service that we think will benefit you, our users. Over the past six months, the code monkeys at SMFNew HQ have been developing a cool new piece of software that will innovate forum usage. So on this date, we have decided that the time is right to announce our upcoming service, SMFNew Voice(TM). SMFNew Voice(TM) will take over from the current, boring way of visiting forums. From the 1st of September, 2015, we will redirect all users visiting SMFNew forums or SMFNew.com to the new SMFNew Voice(TM) service.

SMFNew Voice(TM)'s home page will have a set of commands (which will be spoken via your microphone). A few of these commands would include:

-Create new forum
-Support Forum
-Go To (Forum Name)
-Go To My Forum (Forum Name or ID Number)

So how does this work? If a user wished to create a new forum, they would say, "Create new forum", after which they will be directed to the normal signup page, but they will no longer have to type in the information; they will now use only their voice to enter in these details. If a user desired to visit a certain forum, they would say "Go To (SMFNew Support Forum)", replacing the text within the parentheses with the name of the forum that they wish to visit.

Once on a forum, they will also be able to use their voice commands here. Some of the forum-side voice commands would include:

-View thread 'threadIDhere'
-Reply to thread
-Create new topic
-and so much more!

As part of our plan to bring back the popularity of web forums, we will be phasing out the use of the usual keyboard and mouse, and replacing it entirely with SMFNew Voice(TM). This means you will no longer have to use a cumbersome keyboard or mouse to talk to each other! Yet another reason why SMFNew leads the pack of online forum hosts!

We hope you will all enjoy this upcoming feature. We will be launching an early beta access program tomorrow and will invite some of our most loyal users to try out this innovative service and help us refine it. If you'd like to be invited to this early beta access program, please reply to this thread and let us know why YOU think you deserve to be a part of this monumental change in SMFNew history!

See you in beta early access!

Support / [OFFICIAL] Tutorial Videos
« on: June 24, 2014, 01:56:04 am »
A new SMFNew Tutorial Video is up. This time, Ninja111 talks about how to set up and manage our built-in arcade feature.

Enjoy, and as always, we appreciate any feedback!

EDIT: Jacob had a blonde moment and forgot to post the video link in this post. We yelled at him, and now he's cowering in a corner promising to never do it again. Here's the video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h19T7sKF5G8

News & Updates / SMFNew is now on YouTube!
« on: June 23, 2014, 01:02:53 am »

As part of our continued efforts to offer top-of-the-line support and interaction with our users, we ran a poll to see if you, our users, would be interested in seeing official SMFNew video tutorials. We considered the possibilities, and today, we're happy to announce the launch of the official SMFNew YouTube channel! On the new channel, you will find many videos relating to SMFNew, particularly tutorial videos on commonly-asked support questions, as well as some of the most popular tips/tutorials here on the forum. You may even see video logs from the staff from time-to-time. Obviously, as a new initiative, we understand there may be things we can improve on, so we really do appreciate your feedback.

On another front, this opens up a lot more opportunities for you to get involved in helping make SMFNew better. If you have a passion for helping others, as well as a passion for making videos, please feel free to let us know! Check out the official "Register your interest" thread for more information on this new position. We look forward to hearing from you!

« on: April 12, 2014, 01:46:39 am »
Hello users!

Recently, there has been quite a stir over a major OpenSSL bug which causes security vulnerabilities on some websites and services. We just wanted to let people know that SMFNew is safe from this bug, so there's no need to worry about it. :)

Regards,
- SMFNew Administration

News & Updates / An important announcement
« on: March 31, 2014, 11:24:42 pm »
Well, I suppose it's true when they say nothing lasts forever. In December of 2010, I joined a team of like-minded people that essentially changed my life. I learned many things, and over time, I grew from the newbie of the team to the head of the support team.

I've been behind many things, particularly during the hard times we had when our network was plagued with multitudes of spam forums. I dedicated countless hours behind-the-scenes to remove spam forums and check to ensure we only had legitimate forums online.

So, three years later, here we are. A fresh new start in our eighth year- we saw a new owner, new team operation, and the release of the incredible SMFNew 2. It has been truly glorious being a part of this incredible service and great team, but sadly, my time with you all has come to an end.

As I go forward into my career, I need to dedicate a lot more time towards studies and jobs that I make a living off of. I'd love to stick around, but I really don't want to see our famously-efficient support team be bogged down by a never-present leader. So with a heavy heart, I decided it would be best for all of us if I parted ways with the team.

I wish everyone well, and I'd like to thank Matt (for giving thisspiral fool a chance), Alex (for putting up with my foolishness), Todd (for helping me advance my career by working in a more professional manner), and now the new owner for letting me work to help make SMFNew 2 become truly great. I'd also like to thank Trax for years of camaraderie, Billy for being a great support apprentice, and now Ollie (Ninja111), for helping bring the dream of a renewed SMFNew to the world. I'm going to miss the times I spent with all of you.

And last, but not least, I want to thank our wonderful community for being there for us, and myself personally, over the years. Without you, none of this would have been possible!

Sincerely,
-Jacob

PS- Stay alert, people.

Tips & Resources / Tell Us...
« on: February 17, 2014, 10:43:22 pm »
Well, the poll we ran on tutorial videos passed unanimously, so we're going to start trying to create tutorial videos, and we will be trying to bring on a dedicated video maker or two to join our video-making team.

That being said, we want the community to tell us what kind of subjects they want us to make tutorials on. It can be a video version of an existing tutorial, it can be a tutorial on how to use some of the new features brought with SMFNew 2, or it can be on topics such as HTML/JavaScript and CSS modification.

Of course, since we currently only have one video maker (whose primary role is support), these videos may take a bit of time before we can release them... unless you decide to register your interest to join our video-making team on this thread.

Computer Help / Un-official 'Post Your Specs' Thread
« on: February 17, 2014, 06:59:55 pm »
In this thread, you may post the specifications (specs) of any computers you may own. You can also share your opinion specific hardware/machines here.

I built a desktop custom through Ibuypower, and I'm very satisfied with its build and performance. For ~$1500, I built a powerhouse that can smoothly run the most intense games out there (I can run Assassin's Creed Unity at 30-60+ with ultra, despite how poorly optimized the game was). I have an Asetek LC unit on the CPU, and the case has two fans with slots for four more. It stays very cool even after cranking performance, and the side fan lights up blue, lighting the entire rig internally. It came with a nice gaming keyboard and mouse, and despite the month it took to arrive (I ordered it around the holidays unfortunately), I feel the wait was pretty much worth it. Specs below:

  • AMD Eight-Core FX-8320 CPU (~3.5GHz)
  • Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling System attached to the CPU, keeping things running cool and smooth, rarely ever exceeding 60-70° C on max stress
  • Two blue LED fans; one is intake, the other is exhaust
  • Corsair 16GB DDR3-1600 (8GB x2)
  • Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB 7200RPM (going to be getting a second HDD, this one is packed full lol)
  • MSI GTX 980 Twin Frozr, 4GB VRAM, core clock at 1.3GHz via Afterburner (I love MSI products including Afterburner and their gaming app)
  • Rosewill HIVE series 750W PSU
  • MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) (MS-7641) mainboard
  • Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
  • AZZA Armour chassis (in the process of getting a new one as this one is way too small)
  • CoolerMaster CMStorm Devastator gaming keyboard + mouse, backlit with blue LEDs
  • HP W2072a LED monitor (1600x900)
  • Logitech LS21 Stereo system w/ subwoofer
  • Jeecoo JC-G1000 over-ear headset with blue LEDs
Since purchasing this desktop, I've only had to change the hardware once, and it wasn't so much out of necessity as it was that I just felt like upgrading. The system came with an MSI GTX 650 (2GB VRAM) and a 500w PSU, with only one intake fan and the LC unit functioned as exhaust. The 650 was either faulty or was going back because of time, because no matter what I did, any game past ~2006 would give heavy artifacting and would often TDR (Timeout Detection Recovery) crash or BSOD whenever I'd play the games, often causing corrupt save data or lack of progress in any games. However, since I upgraded to the 980, got my new PSU, and added a second fan in this thing, it has been nothing short of a great experience. I'm very satisfied with the job MSI and Nvidia did with this new GPU in particular.

What are your PCs and gaming rigs like? :)

Feedback / Register Your Interest!
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:14:42 pm »
Hello,

With the new year, SMFNew 2, and our continual growth, we're doubling our efforts to create the best experience we can. In 2014 and beyond, we hope to expand our support, advocate, and video-making teams so we can achieve this goal.

As a work-from-home and not-for-profit hosting group, all positions are voluntary, as all funding is needed to keep this service free for everyone. The team positions are not paid, but we do offer incentives similar to length of service awards, including internal promotion, and for longer-serving team members, free Ultimate Hosting. That being said, there are a few things we're looking for in staff members, as shown below.

Available support specialist positions: 0

- Support Specialist -

What we're looking for...
  • A passion for helping others, and a friendly, professional attitude
  • Fluent in the English language and proper grammar usage
  • A strong background in using the SMF software and knowledge on hosting processes
  • Experience in using SMFNew
What they do...

Support specialists are experienced users who prove themselves to be friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. Support specialists aid in providing top-of-the-line support by answering support questions people post on our support forum. They regularly check in to the forum, and work together with other support specialists to ensure that every question is answered quickly, efficiently, and completely. Additionally, they have moderation powers and are also tasked with keeping the community in order on the forum- they can move, lock, and sticky topics, and they have the ability to take action against bad behavior.

If you're interested...

If you're interested in joining our support team, please PM Jacob F (Support Team Mentor), including the answers to the following questions:

  • What previous experience with SMF and SMFNew do you have?
  • In your opinion, how well do you work with others?
  • On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your fluency in English, as well as your grammar skills?
  • Are you willing/able to check in to the support forum and provide support at least once every two weeks?
  • How long have you been using SMFNew?
  • Are you able to sacrifice time, particularly in busy times, to help ensure we provide top-of-the-line support?
  • Are you willing to work together with other support specialists, and let the Support Team Mentor teach you how to meet our standards of support?
  • How long do you hope/plan to stay with the team?

Available advocate positions: 2

- SMFNew Advocate -

What we're looking for...
  • A friendly, professional attitude
  • Excellent fluency in the English language (fluencies in other languages a plus), and excellent grammar skills
  • Excellent connections outside of SMFNew
  • A passion for SMFNew and spreading the word
  • Willingness to tell any and everyone the word about SMFNew and SMFNew 2.0
  • Willingness to work together with other advocates and keep the SMFNew management team updated on what you're doing
What they do...

SMFNew Advocates are essentially staff members who go out and promote SMFNew to communities and people around the internet, telling others what makes SMFNew so great and unique. They ensure that people know about the service and why we are the right choice for forum hosting.

If you're interested...

If you're interested in joining our advocate team, please PM Jacob F, including the answers to the following questions:

  • How much experience do you have with SMFNew?
  • In your opinion, how well do you work with others?
  • On a scale of 1-10, rate your fluency in English and grammar skills.
  • What social media/communities do you actively take part in? How often do you log into them?
  • Are you willing to sacrifice some time to regularly spread the word of SMFNew?
  • How active do you expect you'll be on different communities as SMFNew Advocate?
  • Will you keep the SMFNew management team (admins and team mentors/leaders) up-to-date on your actions as SMFNew Advocate?
  • How long do you hope/expect to be with the SMFNew team?

Available video-maker positions: 1

Video Maker

What we're looking for...

  • A friendly attitude
  • Excellent English verbal communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • A strong knowledge of SMFNew and HTML/CSS
  • Good video capture and editing software (doesn't have to be professional software; merely must be powerful enough to create nice-looking and high quality videos)
  • Excellent video editing skills
  • A passion for helping others
What they do...
Video makers are part of our new tutorial video-making initiative. They create high-quality tutorial videos that easily explain a variety of features in their videos (as per request by the community), and they work together to ensure their videos are concise, explanatory, and easy-to-understand.

If you're interested...
If you're interested in joining our video team, please PM both Jacob F and Ninja111, including the answers to the following questions, as well as an example of previous video-making work:
  • How much experience do you have with SMFNew?
  • In your opinion, how well do you work with others?
  • On a scale of 1-10, rate your fluency in English and your verbal communication skills.
  • Are you willing to sacrifice some time to regularly create tutorial videos for our users?
  • How often do you expect to be able to create tutorial videos?
  • Will you keep the SMFNew management team (admins and team mentors/leaders) up-to-date on your actions, and will you submit your videos to them before posting them publicly?
  • How long do you hope/expect to be with the SMFNew team?

Thank you for your interest in joining our team! Please note that registering your interest does not guarantee a position, and this is not an application form. This is merely a way for us to know who is interested, and it will allow us, as a team, to determine who we think would be a great addition to the team. We will add new positions as we have need for them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this thread.

Kind regards,
-The SMFNew Team

Tips & Resources / [Poll] Tutorial Videos
« on: January 06, 2014, 04:58:28 pm »
Hello everyone!

With SMFNew 2.0, we're committed to bringing you not only the best hosting experience, but the best support and community experience as well. We're going to be reworking the wiki soon to be up-to-speed with SMFNew 2.0, with updated and more informative tutorials (we're going to need some help with this, so keep an eye out for an upcoming thread). We've been chatting behind the scenes about ways to further accomplish the goal of having an informative knowledge base, and we thought, "What if we created official SMFNew tutorial videos for our users?".

It's something that hasn't been done officially for any forum host (as far as we're aware), so we feel this will give us an edge on the competition, as well as aid in making you, the users, more connected and knowledgeable about how much potential you have with SMFNew 2.0. That being said, we don't want to put the effort into making these videos unless we believe the community will enjoy and use them, so we've created a poll above that you can vote to tell us what you think on the idea.

We want to ensure the community is as involved in the future of this service as much as we are, so if the community votes in favor of the idea, we'll run another poll asking how often we should attempt to make the videos, as well as on what particular subjects you want us to make videos of. In addition, we want to see our community making unofficial tutorial videos as well, because with a small team, there's no way for us to cover all subjects. So if this idea is passed, every month, we'll pick a community tutorial video, along with a community tutorial in this board, and we'll sticky them as a featured community tutorial. Also, we may even invite a few of you to be part of our official video making team, so make sure your tutorials are informative, high-quality, and easy-to-understand.

This poll is only going to be run for 30 days, so get to voting! ;)

Regards,
-The SMFNew Team

... Ninja111, the newest addition to our support team! He has been with SMFNew for years now- many of you likely have encountered him posting here on the support forum. We look forward to working with him, and we're sure that his addition to our support team will only help make the service even greater.

So please, give a warm welcome to Ninja! :)

General Discussion / Merry Christmas from SMFNew!
« on: December 24, 2013, 04:28:45 pm »
Hi everyone!

All of us at SMFNew would like to wish you a merry Christmas. We had an.. interesting year, I'd say, but we're very optimistic about the future of the service. We have some plans and ideas to improve the service in the coming year, and we're pretty sure you, our users, will enjoy them.

Apologies for the downtime and lack of transparency throughout the year- community interaction is something I'd like to improve in 2014. If you have any suggestions, we certainly appreciate them!

All of that being said, again, merry Christmas, and have a happy New Year!

News & Updates / A Goodbye
« on: May 15, 2013, 09:19:02 pm »
Hi everyone,

It's with great sadness that I announce that our other senior support specialist/support mentor, Trax, has decided to leave our team. He has been with us off-and-on throughout the greater part of about two and a half years now, but he feels it is time for him to move on to other projects of his own.

Please join us in wishing Trax a big 'au revoir' and good luck. :) All the best, buddy - we'll all miss you and your contribution!

Regards,
- Jake and the SMFNew team

We value our users' feedback in everything, so we've put this poll up for our users so you can have a way to express your thoughts on SMFNew. This way, we'll have a way to gather feedback and possibly make any changes that we can, and you'll have a way of getting your thoughts to us. So if you have questions, comments, or concerns about our service, please let us know! The more feedback we receive, the better!

Thanks,
