Support / Increase In Database Errors
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:44:24 pm »
Hey All,

Just thought I'd let you know that since the server maintenance on Friday I've noticed an increase in database errors or "SMF Cannot Connect to the Database" errors across the network. This includes here on the support forum, my own forum (http://simopsis.smfnew.com) as well as another forum on the free network (http://cheesesc4.smfnew.com). As mentioned, it's both the error where you are on a blank page with the "SMF Cannot Connect to the Database" error, as well as the SMFNew "Uh oh, Can't Connect to the database!" error page.

Just thought I would let you know. Their frequency only increased after Friday's server work.

Support / Pro Hosting Questions
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:28:28 pm »
Hello All,

I'm considering purchasing pro hosting for my website. The free service has been good aside from some of the problems related to the server move but hey, things happen. Although the site is small, we've been expanding features that are stand-alone from our site. We could continue on the free service, but I'm increasingly looking to add new features that we simply can't with the free service.

The main thing we are looking to do is unite our current off-site file exchange and add a chat, as well as the freedom to install other mods and themes of our choosing. Before I begin the process though, I have a few questions...

1 - I vaguely remember that due to the problems from the server move in October that pro hosting transfers were put on hold. Is that true or did I imagine that? :P If pro host transfers are on hold, when will transfers begin again - if there is any timeline? I have a limited time line to get transferred and do the site upgrades.

2 - If we transfer to pro hosting and buy the 6 month plan, if after 3 months we decide not to continue on with the pro hosting, would we be able to get a refund for the remaining portion of the plan we purchase?

3 - Semi-related to the above question, can we go back from pro to the free service. (Assuming we lose the extra mods, etc.)?

4 - Are the themes on the free service available to pro hosting users? If not, it's not a major problem. We have some options available.

That's it for now. Thanks in advance. I'm not 100% sure if we will transfer yet, still a few things to work out. :)
Also, would it be okay to use this thread if I have additional question... sort of like a pre-sales thread?

Your help is much appreciated. :)

Show Off / Simopsis: Forum Dedicated to "SIM" Games
« on: October 31, 2012, 01:56:31 pm »
Hello!

I'm here to talk about my site (obviously :P) called Simopsis. We opened up in April of this year on a different free forum service. Long story short, we moved here and started completely from scratch. Since starting up here at SMFNew we've grown to 19 members and 560+ posts. We're certainly not huge, but we are far more active than every since moving here. In fact, we outgrew the size of our old site in the first month after moving here. :)

A little about the games we cover: we focus heavily on SimCity 4, The Sims 3 and the upcoming 2013 SimCity Release. We also, to a lesser extent, focus on CitiesXL and The Sims 2. For these game we have areas to have general discussions about the games as well as areas to show off your work. Like many newer, smaller sites the hub of activity is in our off-topic section, however we are growing in the games discussion department. We also have areas for discussion on "other" sim games, and have not ruled out adding devoted boards to other games as discussion on them grows.

We recently completed an update which saw the site get a new look (dubbed Simopsis 2.1) and new layout. We've been growing steadily, and would love to see any of you looking at this thread to join. As part of this remodel, we recently launched an off-site file exchange so you can upload your MODs/Content for the games we cover. It is just starting out, and we are actively recruiting members to upload their content to it.

We also have "creator boards" where teams of custom content creators or individuals show off their work. I encourage you to check it out. :)

The site staff and other members would love to see you join our site. We're actively recruiting members and trying to grow our site. I encourage you to join and check it out. If you have any feedback please feel free to post it on the site or here!

Out address is:

Cheers!

Support / Attachment Space - Possible Increase?
« on: October 19, 2012, 04:48:47 pm »
Howdy.

I'm looking at expanding my forum's offering, and am hoping to include a section where members of our site can download modifications and additional features for the various games we cover. These would be user-created mods. The users would attach them to posts in a special forum devoted to downloads.

Currently, the overall storage limit for our forum in terms of attachments to posts is 10MB. I was wondering if it would be possible to have it increased? A typical file is around 3MB-5MB in size (everything would be in .zip format), however we'd institute a maximum of 10mb for a single file.

If it is possible, is there a fee for the increase? (and if so, how much would that be? Is it possible to get increased storage space without PROHosting?)

I understand that the priority is getting the service back up to 100% (which obviously makes sense). So I understand even if possible it may be a while, until everything is back to normal.

My site: http://simopsis.smfnew.com

Thanks!

Hello, my site (simopsis.smfnew.com) seems to be experiencing a 500 Internal Server Error. Below is the message:

Support / Photos Not Showing Up in Certain Posts
« on: August 21, 2012, 04:57:41 pm »
Hello!

I've recently re-opened my forum onto SMF (from another host - it was a brand new board and nothing was transferred.) A problem has arisen in a particular thread, located here: http://www.simopsis.smfnew.com/index.php?topic=26.0

You can see the problem very well in this post: http://www.simopsis.smfnew.com/index.php?topic=26.msg145#msg145
Other posts were having the same issue, but have been edited to say "Coming Soon" due to the nature of the thread being displaying photos.

For interests sake, the BBCode of that post is:

==================
We're going to kick off this update with a few announcements. First of which, the journal due to the lack of interest and activity has been discontinued on CSGforums (and because I rarely if at all post there anymore). Second is that Durham v2 now has its own website, which can be found [url=http://durhamsc4.weebly.com/]here![/url]. It's not quite complete so don't nitpick just yet :P

A journal which will run alongside this one, Stories of Durham is in progress. It will showcase two different provinces within Durham - Stocking Island and Pembroke Territory. It is scheduled to be started on 10 September.

Now, onto the update.

The population of Whitewater as a whole has surpassed 15,000. Whitewater has hit 8,500 and Goldspire is at 5,500. Because of the difficulty of enforcing the council's ordinances in Goldspire for being so far south and with a population surging nearly as high as Whitewater Run's, it has decided to liberate Goldspire and establish its own council.

While this took many worries off of Whitewater Run's shoulders, it thrust them onto Goldspires, and Whitewater Run still has some troubling concerns to take care of. First is the increasing demand for agriculture in Whitewater Run, but the lack of space makes that a problem. An area near the industrial dispatch in Whitewater Run is being considered for farming, however it hasn't been made official yet.

Agriculture isn't the only thing in demand in Whitewater Run - a new industrial dispatch has already been approved for a small peninsula on the western portion of the river.

In Goldspire several problems present the newly formed council. One problem is connections to Whitewater Run. Although construction of the rail link has been making swift problems, manufactured products have been sitting warehoused. Another concern that has been raised is the large amounts of traffic headed to the nearest ferry dock in the nearby village of White Settlement. This is the largest problem facing the council right now as road pollution has been killing farm fields nearby. Something must be done soon in order to save the agricultural business in Goldspire.

Another concern facing Whitewater Run's council is the growth on Branch Island. Surrounding terrain is too steep to build on, however holds one of the rail junctions for the Whitewater Run - Goldspire rail link. Another junction connecting Wooded Island to Branch Island is located nearby, and is expected to be the location for a new industrial dispatch within the next ten years.

You will notice the bold and italic functions don't work in these posts, either. I've run the basic maintenance tasks, including checking for any errors, and this has not been solved. What is further odd is some posts do have BBCode working correctly.

Any assistance with this issue would be welcome, as this is a mystifying problem. It only has happened in this topic so far, and nowhere else on the board.

Thank You,
sL

Edit:  Just a note - I had enabled the max photo size option, but have since disabled it due to this problem.

Support / "Citiez" Theme - Logo Replacement Problem
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:33:15 pm »
Hello All!

I am currently in the process of (probably) moving my forum to SMFNew. I am looking at using the "CITIEZ" theme, however there seems to be a problem with replacing the logo. Whenever I insert my own logo, the header "shrinks" and cuts off a large part of the image, and the logo is brought to the top of the header area, as opposed to being centred/in the middle. I have an image of the theme without my logo, and then with a blank image placed.

This occurs no matter the size of the logo, or photo hose I use.

Without logo:

With test logo:

As you can see, when I add a custom logo the header gets cut off and the logo is right at the top of the header. I am wondering if there is any possibility of this issue being fixed. Thanks!

Forum URL:
http://simopsis.smfnew.com
Note, it is in maintenance mode right now, but you can still see the problem even in maintenance mode.

And I believe the issue is simmilar to this thread: http://www.support.smfnew.com/index.php?topic=8023.msg41570#msg41570

Thanks in advance,
sL
