Support / Re: My forum getting real slow
« on: June 10, 2017, 08:03:18 pm »
Likewise, it seems to load as fast as usual for me. Is this issue occurring for other users or just yourself? If it's seemingly only on your end, then it could be something to do with your own internet service provider (ISP). If other people are having this issue, it could be the external images and/or scripts mentioned above.

I believe this has to do with the SSL encryption that many sites use. If you check to the left of the URL you have in your address bar, if there's a gray circle with a lowercase "i" inside, you can click that and change site permissions (can it access your location, your microphone, etc), how many cookies are being used by the site, site settings within the browser, as well as whether or not the site is secured with SSL. When a site is not secured with SSL, it will say "Your connection to this site is not secure". On the other side, if a site is secured with SSL, the "i" icon won't be there: it will be replaced with a green padlock followed by the text "Secure", then it will show you "https://" in green like that, followed by your URL.

It shouldn't be anything to worry about. :) The only issue might be for users who use the same password across multiple websites, as if a hacker intercepts their connection, it's possible they may obtain that data. It's not a good idea to use the same password across multiple sites, however, even if SSL is enabled.

Addendum: Just a general web browsing tip. It's not a good idea to use credit cards (and especially not debit cards) on pages that aren't secured with SSL. For example, if you use Amazon, you'll notice they have SSL encryption thus your transaction is safe from hackers. Otherwise, you could be leaving yourself open for a hacker to intercept and steal your card number.

Yes, this forum is for forums hosted on SMFNew itself. You'll have better luck at as they're more suited for custom help. Good luck! :)

The reason people still use SMF free hosting like SMFNew is because it's a free and simple setup. You don't have to pay anything and you don't have to mess around with setup. I mean, yeah, hosting your own forum on your own server can offer the full control over your forum if you intend to use it as, say, a corporate forum, but using free forum hosting just makes sense for forums based on an entertainment franchise like Pokemon. He probably thinks that because we manage the back end, you have little to no control over how your forum is run. Funny thing is, SMFNew -- particularly SMFNew 2.0 -- offers more customization and control than some hosts do.

Oh absolutely, I much prefer forums even to this day. Social media is convenient, that's why it's popular. But I still love forums more, and I wish there were a way to rejuvenate them and revolutionize them so that we can make them popular again. I'd say the social network that killed forums the most would be Reddit, since Reddit is like a site where you can create your own forum-like discussion boards for different topics but they're all linked to a central database meaning you don't have to register for multiple different sites and such.

Yeah, it is unfortunate that social media does overtake forums. I have always preferred forums to social media, personally. But no one can seem to be hassled enough to use forums nowadays when they can use social media for everything. :\ But yeah, if we were to get forums back to the way they used to be, we -- the collective community that loves forums -- would need to do some serious work to make forums more appealing to people. This would require pretty large changes to the way forums work, which I'm not sure everyone would be into.

To do that, you'd need to navigate to Admin > "Registration" (under the Members category) > Settings > "Method of registration employed for new members" > set to "Admin Approval" > Save. After that, all new registrations will require admin approval.

Unfortunately, custom images are not currently supported for rank stars. However, you can use the vast library of star/rank bar images that we have by doing as ninja111 explains.

Please feel free to write tutorials to help people with their customization, that would help plenty of people. As for a featured forum thing, thanks for the suggestion! We'll see what we can do. :)

I haven't played Pokemon (any of the series) for quite some time, but I do know there are a lot of people interested in it. Where all have you shared your forum?

I can safely say that I've never even heard of that word. :o Anyways, mine was Yahoo, they just broke their own record for having the largest security breach in history. It's just sad. Is it weather? No rain here, just a few inches of snow with 13°F temperatures. Whoop-dee-doo. I feel bad for those without shelter. :\

Anyways, here's mine:

Music to do with the season.

Simple Machines. :P Hmm, you've got me stumped with that one lol

An easier one: _A_O_

Recently affected by a big security breach and is incidentally one of the worst companies in modern technology/media history.
